90.9% Of Women Enjoy Receiving Oral Sex [1,058-Woman Study]

We surveyed 1,058 women to answer one question:

Do women actually enjoy receiving oral sex?

Alongside that, we dug into 13 related factors — positions, technique, duration, and more — to understand what makes cunnilingus satisfying, and what tends to ruin it.

Here's what we found.

1. 90.9% of women enjoy receiving oral sex.

2. Yet 79.4% have had at least one unenjoyable experience receiving it.

3. "Bad technique" was cited by 55.9% of women as the top reason for a disappointing experience.

4. The leading reason women enjoy receiving oral is how their partner makes them feel emotionally (24%).

5. 51.8% orgasmed during their most recent experience receiving oral sex. Asked whether they'd ever orgasmed from it, 78.1% said yes.

1. 14% experienced squirting (female ejaculation) during their most recent experience receiving oral. 31.1% had squirted from it at least once ever.

7. The vast majority (67.3%) named "lying on my back" as their favorite position to receive oral sex.

8. The 69 position (26.4%) ranked as the least enjoyable position for receiving oral, closely trailed by standing (25.9%).

9. 8.4% of women prefer receiving oral sex to vaginal sex.

1. The average ideal duration for receiving oral sex is 19 minutes and 40 seconds.

2. 92% enjoy their partner using fingers on or inside their vagina during oral sex.

12. 10.7% prefer their partner to have a beard during oral sex. 52.3% said facial hair doesn't matter either way.

13. 48.6% enjoy receiving anilingus (oral sex in, on, or around the anus).

14. 10.3% enjoy receiving oral sex during their period.

90.9% Of Women Enjoy Receiving Oral Sex

We opened with a simple yes/no question:

Do you enjoy receiving oral sex?

The picture is unmistakably clear: 9 out of 10 women enjoy a partner going down on them. Only about 9% — roughly 1 in 10 — don't.

That said, this near-unanimous result comes with an important caveat…

79.4% Have Had At Least One Unenjoyable Experience Receiving Oral Sex

While most women enjoy receiving oral sex overall, we wanted to know how many had also had a genuinely bad experience with it.

A striking 79.4% said yes, they'd had at least one unsatisfying encounter.

Key takeaway: it's entirely possible to give your partner a disappointing oral sex experience, even if she generally loves it when you go down on her.

Plenty of factors explain why, which we break down next.

Side note: This mirrors what we found in our study on whether women enjoy giving blow jobs: the majority (92.6%) genuinely enjoy giving oral sex to men, yet over three-quarters (76.8%) have given a blow job they didn't personally enjoy.

The #1 Reason For Unenjoyable Oral Sex: Bad Technique

Understanding what ruins oral sex for women matters — it tells you exactly what to avoid, and what to focus on instead.

In this multiple-choice question, bad technique topped the list at 55.9% — the single most common complaint.

Close behind: not reaching orgasm (47.7%) and feeling too uncomfortable or tense to relax (47.7%).

Finishing too quickly (17.1%) or dragging on too long (14.5%) were cited less often. Lack of attraction to the giving partner barely registered, at just 12.5%.

6.5% said they'd felt forced or pressured into being eaten out — unsurprisingly, a recipe for a terrible experience.

5.83% chose "other" and wrote in their own answers, several of which were genuinely eye-opening:

• He didn't know what TF he was doing and it felt like what one would imagine is an alien probe.
• I told him gently how to (do it), but that apparently went over his head…
• Too much slobber.
• They spit on my vagina and told me there was something wrong with me.
• My partner treated my vagina like it was a construction site.
• He thought he was a weed eater and was too rough, wasn't enjoyable at all
• They were overly excited as in growling.

The Top Reason For Enjoyment: How Her Partner Made Her Feel Emotionally

Beyond what ruins oral sex, we wanted to know what actually makes it great.

For this question, we asked respondents to pick the single most important factor behind an enjoyable experience.

The winner: how the giver makes the receiver feel mentally and emotionally, at 24%.

Close behind: "I had an orgasm" (21.5%) and the oral sex techniques used (19.8%). Notably, an enthusiastic partner beat out an attractive one (16.6% vs. 12.8%) as a factor in good oral sex. One respondent put it simply: "My partner enjoys giving it and that helps me enjoy it."

The takeaway: orgasm and technique both matter, but neither outweighs the emotional connection the giving partner brings to the experience.

51.8% Orgasmed During Their Most Recent Experience Receiving Oral Sex

We asked whether respondents had reached orgasm during their most recent oral sex session. More than half — 51.8% — said yes.

We followed up with a broader question:

Have you ever had an orgasm during any previous experience receiving oral sex?

78.1% said yes, at least once.

That's a meaningful finding, since many women in heterosexual relationships struggle to orgasm from vaginal intercourse alone, while their male partners rarely face the same issue — a pattern known as the orgasm gap.

For anyone struggling to orgasm during vaginal sex, this suggests cunnilingus might be a more reliable path.

1 In 7 Women Squirted During Their Most Recent Oral Sex Experience

Female ejaculation, or squirting, is a hotly debated topic online, so we included two related questions.

Thinking back on their most recent experience receiving oral, 14% reported experiencing female ejaculation. We followed up with:

Have you ever squirted (female ejaculation) during any session when receiving oral sex?

31.1% said yes, at least once.

If female ejaculation interests you personally, or you're hoping to help a partner experience it, cunnilingus appears to be a genuinely effective route.

Lying On Their Back Is Women's Favorite Position For Receiving Oral Sex

There's more than one way to enjoy cunnilingus positionally, so we asked which position women preferred most.

The results were decisive — 67.3% chose lying flat on their back as their top pick. The runner-up was more surprising…

10.7% chose sitting on their partner's face as their preferred position.

A few standout write-in answers for "Other":

• Any position where I feel like my vagina is not a spectacle.
• At the top of the stairs on my back with my legs raised and feet resting on the handrails.
• All of the above.
• It's a tie between sitting on his face and laying down.
• Laying down on my back with a pillow under my bottom and knees to my chest.

The 69 Position Is Women's Least Favorite For Receiving Oral Sex

We also asked which positions women liked least for receiving oral.

The spread here was far more varied than for favorites.

The 69 position topped the list, with 26.4% naming it their least favorite.

Standing while being eaten out came in close behind at 25.9%.

Rounding out the top five: sitting on a partner's face (19.5%), being on hands and knees (12.2%), and sitting down (7.5%).

Only 3.6% picked lying on their back as their least favorite — reinforcing just how strongly that position wins overall.

1 In 12 Women Prefer Oral Sex To Vaginal Sex

We already know 90.7% of women enjoy being eaten out. But do they prefer it to regular vaginal sex?

For the most part, no.

Only 8.4% said they preferred receiving oral sex over vaginal intercourse.

61.1% rated both as equally enjoyable, while 30.5% preferred vaginal sex outright. Once you exclude the "equally enjoyable" group, vaginal sex wins out by a margin of nearly 3.7 to 1.

In short: most women lean toward vaginal sex overall, but oral sex comes remarkably close in terms of pleasure.

The Ideal Cunnilingus Duration: 19 Minutes And 40 Seconds On Average

We suspected readers would find it useful to know roughly how long oral sex "should" last.

So we asked every respondent for their ideal session length, within a 0-60 minute range.

The average came out to 19 minutes and 40 seconds, with a median of 16 minutes.

That said, the individual answers varied enormously, as our scatter chart of responses shows.

In other words, the "ideal" duration is a deeply personal call for each woman.

Most Women Enjoy Their Partner's Fingers During Cunnilingus

We also wanted to identify simple ways to boost pleasure during oral sex.

Our hypothesis: that a partner using fingers to stimulate in and around the vagina would enhance the experience.

The data backed this up overwhelmingly. We asked:

Do you enjoy it when your partner uses their fingers on/in your vagina during oral sex?

A full 92% said yes.

The takeaway: if fingers aren't already part of the routine, they're well worth adding.

10.7% Of Women Prefer Their Partner To Have A Beard During Oral Sex

We also looked at whether a partner's facial hair affects enjoyment.

Our assumption going in was that stubble or a beard would be a real turn-off for many.

Turns out, for over half of respondents, it simply doesn't matter — 52.3% said facial hair type made no difference.

26.5% preferred a clean-shaven partner. But interestingly, 21.2% actually preferred some kind of facial hair.

Specifically, 10.7% preferred a full beard and 10.5% preferred stubble.

Our best guess: facial hair may add an extra layer of sensation for some women — though that's worth further study to confirm.

48.6% Of Women Enjoy Receiving Anilingus

We also wanted to specifically explore attitudes toward oral-anal sex, or anilingus (also known as eating ass), to see how it compares.

We asked:

Do you enjoy receiving anilingus?

48.6% said yes, and 51.4% said no.

That near-even split highlights just how important sexual communication with your partner really is here. Rather than assuming either way, it's worth simply asking.

10.3% Of Women Enjoy Receiving Oral Sex During Their Period

Attitudes toward sex during menstruation vary widely, so we looked at whether it affected interest in receiving oral sex specifically.

We first excluded anyone who doesn't currently menstruate, leaving 851 respondents, to keep answers grounded in current experience rather than distant memory.

Among that group, 10.3% said yes, they enjoy receiving oral sex on their period. 89.7% said no.

While the numbers clearly lean toward "no," we didn't ask why — a question worth exploring in future research.

Conclusion

The question "Do women like receiving oral sex?" has a clear answer: the vast majority genuinely do.

We also uncovered plenty of nuance around what makes it enjoyable — position, duration, menstruation, finger use, facial hair preferences, and attitudes toward anilingus.

These findings reflect general trends across women as a group. Still, the smartest move is always talking directly with your partner about her specific preferences, rather than assuming these averages apply to her individually.

Methodology

We began by collecting basic demographics. Anyone who had never received vaginal-oral sex, or wasn't female, was disqualified. All respondents were 18 or older and confirmed having a vagina. That left 1,058 total respondents:

• 867 identifying as heterosexual
• 123 identifying as bisexual
• 12 identifying as homosexual
• 19 specifying an alternative sexuality
• 37 declining to specify

These respondents then answered a range of questions about their preferences and experiences receiving vaginal-oral sex, or cunnilingus.

The survey relied on anonymous self-reported recollections. Participants were encouraged to answer honestly, but self-reported data always carries some risk of inaccuracy.

Related Studies

Anal sex – We surveyed over 1,200 women on attitudes toward anal sex and found a solid majority genuinely enjoy it — 63.3%, to be exact.
