The Scissors looks unusual but is actually pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. It's one of those positions that's genuinely tough to picture without a visual aid. Prefer something more intuitive to start with? Browse our roundup of over 100 different sex positions worth trying tonight.
To try the Scissors sex position with your man, begin lying on your side with one leg flat on the bed and the other stacked right on top of it. Lift and bend that upper leg to give your man clear access. He'll also be on his side, positioned so his head lines up near your feet. From there, he slides his lower leg underneath yours, right up against your crotch.
He then brings his upper leg over your lower one and moves his hips toward you until penetration happens, with your lower leg now sandwiched between his. You'll end up lying on your side facing away from him, while he faces your back. Once he's inside you, thrusting can begin.
Her Role in the Scissors Position
Getting comfortable is step one when you're in the Scissors position with your man. Since you're partly resting on his thigh, it can feel a bit odd at first.
Once you're both settled, just fall into rhythm with him — thrust back gently as he thrusts into you. You'll notice you're engaging your whole body to do it, arms and legs both. Grabbing onto his leg(s) gives you extra leverage to push back against him.
Since your hands and his feet (and vice versa) end up so close together, this is also a fun position to explore if either of you has a foot fetish. Not your thing? Try some dirty talk instead. More dirty talking tips and phrases here.
His Role in the Scissors Position
Your man needs to find his own comfortable setup too, since you'll be putting some of your weight on his leg. Once he's settled, his job is simple: keep thrusting as you push back against him.
He'll have easy access to your top leg, which he can pull toward himself as he penetrates you.
What to Keep in Mind With the Scissors Position
After talking with several Love Curi readers who've tried the Scissors with their partners, here's some practical feedback worth knowing before you try it:
- Expect to adjust a bit before landing on an angle that works well for both of you.
- You can use your own hand for extra clitoral stimulation while in this position.
- A single bed makes this position tricky — you'll need the extra room.
- It's not necessarily the strongest choice for targeted clitoral or G-spot stimulation.
- Larger-bodied couples may find the Scissors awkward to pull off. If that's you, check out my 12 favorite sex positions for overweight people.

Sean's Take on the Scissors Sex Position
I'm a fan of the Scissors, especially as a break from your usual routine. But let me be blunt about one thing: looking exotic and "out there" doesn't automatically make a position more pleasurable. I say that about plenty of unusual positions and techniques, and the Scissors is no exception.
There's also a common stereotype that scissoring is exclusively a lesbian thing. It can be part of it, but…
We've also put together a guide on how to have pleasurable lesbian sex, which likely offers more useful guidance than scissoring alone.
