What Actually Causes Morning Wood, Biologically Speaking
4 min read
Even though you don't have a penis yourself, you've likely noticed that your partner regularly – maybe even every single day – wakes up already erect. Most people have heard the slang term for this, "morning wood," but the clinical name is nocturnal penile tumescence.
Morning wood can be a fun way to kick the day off with some early sex. Or it might just feel like a nuisance when his erection pokes into you while you're trying to sleep. Either way, there's real biology behind why it happens!
Does Morning Wood Signal Good Health?
A guy who regularly experiences morning wood is likely in decent sexual shape overall. It turns out sexual health and general health aren't all that separate. Getting an erection, even one he didn't ask for, shows that his testosterone is where it should be. In fact, low testosterone is one of the known drivers behind erectile dysfunction.
That same hormone plays a role in keeping sex drive healthy for both women and men. Morning wood is simply visible – and touchable – proof that testosterone spikes overnight, which is completely typical for most men. So if testosterone is running low, he may notice fewer morning erections. That's not automatically a red flag, but if he's struggling to get hard at all, a doctor's visit might be worthwhile.
A full bladder can just as easily trigger his morning erection, even though needing to pee is hardly a mood-setter. Still, that's not the whole story, since older men frequently need to use the bathroom in the morning yet experience morning wood far less often. As testosterone and other hormones decline with age, he may see his morning erections become less frequent or less firm, so a slowdown in his 40s and 50s wouldn't be unusual. A doctor might suggest testosterone supplementation as a fix.
Blood flow also matters enormously for the kind of erection that'll really get you going, and it's central to morning wood, too. The nerve signals governing blood flow dial down during REM sleep, which is exactly when erections are most likely to happen. Most of us also wake up right as REM sleep ends.
Guys with sluggish blood flow or low testosterone will see morning wood less often. That doesn't mean he needs to become a gym rat if his mornings aren't giving him wood! Overtraining can actually make erections roughly 90% harder to achieve because of the calorie deficit and physical stress involved. A smarter approach is balanced exercise and good nutrition, which supports overall health – and morning wood tends to follow. Plenty of couples are thrilled when it does, since it's the perfect opening for morning sex!
Turn His Erection Into Something For You
Naturally, you enjoy him being hard, so morning wood is probably a welcome sight. Maybe you've even slipped into sexy lingerie the night before so you'll look great when he wakes up.
That said, not everyone is a fan of morning sex, and that's fair. Your eyes are barely open, your hair's a disaster, and hardly anyone looks their best fresh out of eight hours of sleep! Then there's morning breath, which can really kill the mood. Despite all that, morning sex – or even just a little playful fooling around – can be genuinely fun. Why not make use of that erection while it's there?
You can dodge the bad-breath-and-bathroom-run issue by sneaking off first. If you happen to wake before him and spot his morning wood, you might be able to freshen up without him even noticing. Brush your teeth and fix your hair before sliding back into bed, then run your hand along his shaft or kiss his neck to test his interest. A glass of water or a mint on the nightstand also goes a long way toward neutralizing morning breath and getting you both in the mood.
If kissing isn't your thing first thing in the morning, you can skip it altogether for morning sex. Instead, go down on him. Check out our tips for giving great head. You could also focus on giving hand jobs or let him finger you or go down on you. Morning sex doesn't require penetration at all – lazy grinding and touching counts too if you're too drowsy or short on time for more.
Make room for morning sex when you can. It counts as a workout, so consider it a substitute for the gym that day. And since you'll likely shower, dress, and do your makeup afterward anyway, messy sex isn't really a downside. You could even hop in the shower together afterward to save time and water, if that appeals to you. Check out our advice for amazing sex in the shower.
Beyond that, sex comes with real perks! You'll feel calmer for the rest of the day, and that effect can linger. The closeness that comes with morning sex often feels different from sex at other times, maybe because you're both still groggy and not fully guarded.
Morning sex won't appeal to everyone, and it doesn't have to be a daily habit. There are plenty of explanations for why he wakes up with an erection in the first place. Just because his body is awake and ready doesn't mean his mind is – and that's perfectly fine, since it doesn't say anything negative about his health.
