The Anvil Sex Position

Kneeling Sex PositionButterfly Sex Position
The Anvil sex position is a spin on the Missionary position, and it's an easy one to slide into once you're already having Missionary sex with your man. The image below walks through exactly how to get into the Anvil with him. Before diving in, though, it's worth reading through the rest of this article first, so you can perform it correctly and avoid hurting yourself. Afterward, check out the rest of our Sex Positions Guide here for even more to add to your repertoire.
To try the Anvil, lie on your back the way you would for Missionary. Spread your legs the same way too — but instead of letting them rest on the bed, pull them in close to your chest. Your man then positions himself above you, resting on his hands rather than his elbows. With his help, line up your legs so your calves or ankles rest on his shoulders, on either side of his neck.
What Your Man Does In The Anvil Position
With your legs positioned this way, your man gets much easier access to grind his pubic bone against your clitoris. He does this with a back-and-forth motion, focusing less on deep in-and-out movement and more on steady friction over your clitoris and clitoral hood.
This position also allows for remarkably deep penetration. That's fantastic if you enjoy taking him deep. If your man happens to have a longer penis, though, he may hit your cervix more easily, which can cause real discomfort. Speak up right away if the depth becomes painful.
What You Do In The Anvil Position
While it might feel like your man holds all the control in the Anvil, you actually have the ability to push him back using your legs if needed (assuming he's not significantly bigger and heavier than you!). That gives you real influence over how deep he goes, which means you can usually zero in on a 'spot' that feels amazing.
In the Anvil sex position, your man won't be quite as physically close to you, since your legs are in the way. If you'd like to add more intimacy, though, you can gently rub or scratch his arms as they rest on either side of you.
Tips To Keep In Mind When Trying The Anvil Sex Position
After talking with students who've tried this one, a few recurring themes came up — some challenges, some genuine perks:
- A bit of flexibility helps make this position comfortable.
- The more flexible and fit you are, the longer you'll be able to hold the pose before fatigue, soreness, or cramping sets in.
- If you're on the smaller side, or your man is particularly long, deep penetration in this position can cause real discomfort. Learn how to deal with this here.
- Once you find "the spot," it's incredibly satisfying.

Sean's Take On The Anvil Position
What I love about the Anvil is how easily it flows from Missionary once you've been at it a while. It also feels genuinely different, thanks to the deeper penetration your man can achieve here.
