Is A 6 Inch Penis Enough Or Too Small [Survey of 1,387 Women]

7 min read

We surveyed 1,387 sexually active women to gauge their views on erect penis size. They were asked this question:

Is 6 inches enough to sexually satisfy you?

We also looked into what sizes count as too small or too big for women, what the "ideal" size looks like, and whether penis size actually matters to women at all.

Here's what the data showed:

1. A 6 inch penis satisfies 81.9% of women.

2. A 6 inch penis is too small for 13.6% of women.

3. A 6 inch penis is too big for 4.5% of women.

4. 7.22 inches is the "ideal" size according to women.

5. 40.2% of women say they'd consider cheating on a partner with a small penis.

Note: Our methodology is detailed at the end of this study.

1. A 6 Inch Penis Satisfies 81.9% Of Women

While digging into whether 6 inches is enough to satisfy women, we also asked about every other penis size ranging from 1 to 12 inches.

The results were striking:

The data shows that a 6 inch penis satisfies 81.9% of women — though certainly not every woman. In fact, no single size satisfies everyone. Here's the full breakdown:

  • A 1 inch penis satisfies 8.3% of women.
  • A 2 inch penis satisfies 11.3% of women.
  • A 3 inch penis satisfies 15.8% of women.
  • A 4 inch penis satisfies 32.7% of women.
  • A 5 inch penis satisfies 60.4% of women.
  • A 6 inch penis satisfies 81.9% of women.
  • A 7 inch penis satisfies 88.3% of women.
  • An 8 inch penis satisfies 77% of women.
  • A 9 inch penis satisfies 46.1% of women.
  • A 10 inch penis satisfies 36.8% of women.
  • An 11 inch penis satisfies 25.2% of women.
  • A 12 inch penis satisfies 14.9% of women.

Perhaps our most notable takeaway is that a length between 5 and 8 inches satisfies the majority of women.

Does An Average-Sized Penis Satisfy Most Women?

A 2020 scientific review pooling at least 20 separate studies measured erect penis size directly through researcher measurement (not self-report). It found the average erect penis measures 5.1-5.5 inches (12.9-13.97 cm) in length. Accounting for volunteer bias, the researchers concluded the true average likely sits toward the lower end of that range [1].

That means someone with an average-sized penis is plenty to satisfy most women.

2. A 6 Inch Penis Is Too Small For 13.6% Of Women

Our survey found that 13.6% of women consider a 6 inch penis too small to fully satisfy them sexually. That works out to less than 1 in 7 women who see 6 inches as insufficient.

Other notable figures:

  • A 1 inch penis is too small for 91.2% of women.
  • A 2 inch penis is too small for 87.7% of women.
  • A 3 inch penis is too small for 83.6% of women.
  • A 4 inch penis is too small for 66.1% of women.
  • A 5 inch penis is too small for 38.5% of women.
  • A 6 inch penis is too small for 13.6% of women.
  • A 7 inch penis is too small for 3.9% of women.
  • An 8 inch penis is too small for 3.3% of women.
  • A 9 inch penis is too small for 3.1% of women.

This suggests that the overwhelming majority of men measuring 6 inches or more are rarely seen as inadequate in size by women.

3. A 6 Inch Penis Is Too Big For 4.5% Of Women

One angle on penis size that rarely gets discussed is whether a penis can be too big to satisfy a woman.

Our data shows that, in fact, a 6 inch penis is too big for 4.5% of women — roughly 1 in 22 women.

We can only speculate as to why some women find penises of 6 inches or smaller too large. It's possible they have a shorter-than-average vaginal canal, where even an average-sized penis bottoms out and makes sex painful. Others may have a condition like vaginismus, which causes pain whenever the vagina is stretched.

More findings worth noting:

  • A 5 inch penis is too big for 1.2% of women.
  • A 6 inch penis is too big for 4.5% of women.
  • A 7 inch penis is too big for 7.9% of women.
  • An 8 inch penis is too big for 19.8% of women.
  • A 9 inch penis is too big for 50.8% of women.
  • A 10 inch penis is too big for 61.1% of women.
  • An 11 inch penis is too big for 72.6% of women.
  • A 12 inch penis is too big for 83.4% of women.

Taken together with the previous three findings, it's clear most women don't find small penises particularly satisfying. But the data also shows that most women don't find extremely large penises satisfying either.

In fact, most women rate anything over 9 inches as too big to fully satisfy them sexually.

Given all this, the ideal size range — or Goldilocks penis size range — that satisfies the largest number of women falls between 6 and 8 inches (18.34 cm).

4. 7.22 Inches Is The "Ideal" Length According To Women

We also wanted to nail down women's preferred penis size, so we asked a separate question:

What is your ideal penis length?

Among our 1,387 female respondents, the average ideal length came out to 7.22 inches (18.34 cm).

That figure lands almost exactly in the middle of the Goldilocks range (6-8 inches, or 15.24-20.32 cm) that we identified in our Does Size Matter study.

The average ideal width came out to 1.89 inches (4.8 cm), which translates to an average ideal girth (circumference) of 5.94 inches (15.09 cm).

You can view the percentage of women who chose each penis size as their ideal in the table below.

According to one large-scale study, the average erect penis girth/circumference measures 4.59 inches (11.66 cm) [2]. That puts the ideal girth women want roughly 1.35 inches (3.43 cm) above the actual average.

Knowing the average ideal size might ease anxiety for those worried about penis size, but keep in mind there was significant variation among individual women's preferences.

5. 40.2% Of Women Would Consider Cheating On A Partner With A Small Penis

To round out the study, we dug into a few additional angles on penis size. We asked women whether they'd consider — or definitely — cheat on a partner because of size.

Would Women Cheat Over A Small Penis?

10.7% of women told us they would definitely cheat if their partner's penis were too small.

Another 29.5% said they'd consider cheating under the same circumstances.

Combined, that's 40.2%, or roughly two out of five women who'd at least think about cheating if their partner's penis felt too small.

Would Women Cheat Over A Large Penis?

5.6% of women confirmed they would definitely cheat if their partner's penis were too big.

An additional 24.7% said they'd consider it under those circumstances.

In other words, size does matter in both directions. Being too small isn't the only issue — a penis that's too large can create relationship strain and sexual dissatisfaction just the same.

Conclusion

Our study set out to answer, "Is 6 inches enough to sexually satisfy a woman?" We found that a 6 inch penis satisfies 81.9% of women, while it's too small for 13.6% and too large for 4.5%.

We dug deeper into whether penis size matters to women overall in our companion study, Does Size Matter, covering topics like:

  • Female sexual satisfaction
  • Serious relationships
  • Casual sexual relationships
  • Ending a relationship
  • Cheating on a partner

That study also uncovered the Goldilocks penis size range, or the size range women most prefer.

Methodology

We began by gathering basic demographic data. Respondents who had never had penile-vaginal sex were excluded, as were non-female participants. Everyone was over 18, with a mean age of 42. After filtering, we ended up with 1,387 respondents:

  • 1,125 women identifying as heterosexual
  • 184 women identifying as bisexual
  • 13 women identifying as homosexual
  • 33 women who specified a sexuality outside heterosexual/homosexual/bisexual
  • 32 women who declined to share their sexuality

These participants answered a range of questions capturing their personal feelings, experiences, and preferences around erect penis size in the context of penile-vaginal sex.

Our survey depended on participants' own anonymous recollections and preferences. While respondents were encouraged to answer honestly and reflect their real experiences, this data is ultimately self-reported, so some inaccuracy is possible.
